inACT is an international, peer-reviewed online journal of collaborative, interdisciplinary, artistic, and practice-based research, as well as research in, through and on the arts.
Founded in 2026, it publishes high-quality original research in, through and on the arts.
Thinking, Making and Researching Together
Contemporary artistic and scholarly practices increasingly develop across disciplines, artistic practices, institutions, technologies, communities and different modes of knowing.
inACT provides an international platform for research in which collaboration is not simply a context but an integral part of its methods, processes and outcomes.
For its inaugural volume, inACT welcomes original contributions exploring collaboration as a mode of artistic and scholarly inquiry.
We particularly invite submissions that investigate how knowledge is generated in, through and on the arts, and how collaborative processes can produce new methodologies, practices, perspectives and forms of research.
Contributions may address, but are not limited to:
- collaborative methodologies in artistic research;
- interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary artistic practices;
- research across artistic, academic and professional fields;
- collective and distributed forms of authorship;
- artist–researcher and artist–community collaborations;
- experimental research methodologies;
- relationships between artistic and scholarly modes of knowing;
- work involving institutions, communities and different sectors;
- digital, technological and hybrid forms of artistic collaboration;
- ethical, political and social dimensions of collaborative research;
- documentation and dissemination of artistic research;
- methodological reflection on the possibilities, tensions, failures and uncertainties of collaborative processes.
We encourage submissions that do not merely report collaboration but critically examine what collaboration does to research: how it shapes questions, methods, roles, authorship, knowledge production and artistic practice.
Who Can Submit?
We welcome submissions from artist-researchers, scholars, practitioners and collaborative research teams working across disciplines, sectors and creative practices. inACT welcomes research in, through and on the arts, including mixed-method approaches that integrate artistic and scholarly modes of knowing. Experimental approaches to research communication are encouraged alongside traditional academic formats.Multimedia and Artistic Research
inACT supports research that cannot necessarily be communicated through text alone. Submissions may incorporate supplementary artistic research materials such as scores, audio recordings, video recordings, visual documentation, datasets and other relevant research outputs. These materials should be clearly labelled, appropriately described and form a meaningful part of the research contribution.Submission Length
The recommended submission length is 20,000–40,000 characters, including spaces and references (approximately 3,000–6,000 words). Artistic research submissions must contain a written component of at least 10,000 characters, including spaces.Review and Publication
